Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the streets on my way home from work so it was almost at the end of the afternoon rush hour.

Time

It was taken at the end of the afternoon rush about 5pm in the Spring (April)

Lighting

The image was taken in the later afternoon light on a cloudy overcast day, and if I remember correctly it was raining and a bit darker than usual. Only natural light was used for this shot, but some additional shadows was added in post processing to make the bicycle rider stand out more and give the image a more ominous atmosphere.

Equipment

Handheld shot with Canon 7DmkII and a 70-200mm f2.8 lens at 200mm/f4

Inspiration

Saw this guy riding his bike in his worn out but nice pin stripe jacket, tie and double hat and a very intense and determined look on his face... I instantly knew I had to take the photo and that there was a deeper meaning to this image.

Editing

There was quite a bit of post processing, to emphasize the bicycle rider from disturbing background traffic elements and also to set the perfect mood for the image I had in mind of portraying him as a modern herald of one of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. So naturally it was converted to B&W and optimized for contrasts using curves and local contrasts, then quite a bit of dodging and burning.

In my camera bag

I almost always have my 7DmkII with the 70-200mm f2.8 lens attached and in the bag a 35mm Sigma f1.4 Art, a Tamron 90mm Macro lens, a Canon 430EX-III-RT flash (and remote trigger), a Manfrotto travel tripod in my backpack.

Feedback

As this was a street photo and a chance encounter, I can only give the advice to have your eyes open, your camera ready and at some reasonable settings so that you don't have to fumble with settings when an unexpected situation arises.
