Sandhill Crane courtship dance on the Platte River during migration. They will fly up to 5000 miles in the coming days before returning in the fall. They perform mating rituals..stretching their wings, bowing and leaping into the air. These cranes mate for life. This image was taken in a blind along the Platte River. We tiptoed out under the cover of darkness...not making a sound. You could hear them rustling around but couldn't see them in the dark. Once dawn approached they stretched, danced, courted and then took flight to the surrounding corn fields to eat and forage for the day, returning to the river at sunset.
