Pied Shag couple on a nest. Shags are also known as Cormorants. This species is native to New Zealand. This photo clearly shows the coloration of breeding adults: the skin in front of the eye is yellow, at the base of beak is pink or pink-red, and the eye-ring is blue. It is quite striking and I'm sure makes them very desirious and beautiful to potential mates. This photo was taken at Zealandia, an eco-sanctuary in Wellington, NZ
