Whilst walking through the Caucasus mountains in Georgia, I went in search of the cheesemakers who spend the summer months in the high pastures. I was lucky enough to arrive on sheep shearing day, and spent the afternoon watching the shepherds grappling with the slightly bemused animals as they were manhandled to the floor and shawn!

Location
Whilst walking in the Caucasus mountains in Georgia, I was searching for the local cheesemakers who graze their flocks at high altitudes in the summer pastures. I was lucky enough to come across a group who were in the midst of shearing.Time
I had woken up early, having camoed in the mountains, and in the mid-morning I came across this group of shepherds. After explaining I was travelling by foot and was interested in local traditions, cheesemaking, history and culture, they invited me to join them for lunch. I was given a front seat view of the shearing.Lighting
The light was morning mountain light, one of the most specialEquipment
My camera at the time was a canon powershot, a lightweight, easy to use camera for travelling.Inspiration
I have been travelling the planet for the last 8 years, and by foot for two and a half years. I wanted to be connected to the land, the people and their traditional ways of living. I have always been drawn to the mountains and am particularly interested in cheesemaking. Every country I passed through, I always went in search of the shepherds and stayed some days with them.Editing
I tend to shoot first and think later. I increased the contrast and depth of colour for this, as the original was a little washed out.In my camera bag
I am a life lover first and foremost. When I travelled by foot, I carried 25kgs on my back, and the most important things I had were for camping and being able to survive in extreme weather conditions. So my Canon Powershot was the smallest, lightweight camera I could take whilst still being able to capture the photos I wanted.Feedback
Shoot what you love. And don't think about it. Just do it.
