Location
I took this in a little rented studio in Newmarket, ON. I am gearing up for four days of dance photos and it's my first time doing such a large and involved shoot.Time
It was a late Saturday afternoon. We were well over our rental of four hours but they were kind enough to let us continue as no one had it after us. It was really more of a joke at first to take this photo, but then we loved it!Lighting
I had turned off most of the lights and were just using two flashes to get the photo. I'm not too familiar with equipment use as I like more outdoor/natural lighting. It ended up looking really dramatic, and the darker black and white filter added a bit of drama.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D5100, with an 18-105mm lens, no tripod. I used two studio flashes and I cannot for the life of me remember what brand they were.Inspiration
The kids were just fooling around, mainly making silly faces and having a good laugh. Her mom put the hat on her head saying she wanted on with the hat on, and after some protest we got it on and looking good. She looked down to make sure she was up on her shoes nicely and we all yelled "STAY THERE." We asked her to hold the hat and snap! There we had it.Editing
I used a very generic black and white overlay once I had loaded it onto the computer. In my camera bag
At the moment, I'm a one camera, one lens gal. I've been shooting for almost two years and I'm only 21 so lots of equipment is affordable. And besides, I like the freedom of being able to wrap my camera in a beanie and throw it in any of my bags.Feedback
Let kids be kids. They make the photos, not you. You're just there to capture their moments.
