Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at the Wildlife Refuge in Richfield,Washington. There is many opportunities for bird shots throughout this drive through reserve.

Time

To be honest I cannot say what time of day I took this photo because I get so caught up in photographing all the wildlife there that I usually spend 3-4 hours a day there. Mostly I am there in the AM hours when wildlife is most active.

Lighting

I am a firm believer in the “golden hour”. As I am usually an outdoor photographer I prefer to use natural lighting to my advantage rather than using post editing.

Equipment

I used my trusty Nikon camera.

Inspiration

I got lucky to be able to catch this Kestrel landing in a tree close by. They are very elusive birds and hard to catch in the wild. I feel that this is one of my luckiest photos.

Editing

I am terrible at photoshop....therefore I keep my photos natural and true to how they were taken.

In my camera bag

I usually try to keep 2-3 lenses depending on what I plan on capturing on any given day.

Feedback

Photographing birds can be very difficult because they are not very cooperative. I cannot tell you how many times I have gotten just a wing or a tail. Most of the time will just be a disappointing blur. My advice would be to have lots of patience and don’t give up. The payoff can be very rewarding.
