Location
This shot was taken at Captree State Park on Long Island with the sun setting behind the Robert Moses Bridge.Time
This was taken towards the end of winter, the ice on the Great South Bay was well on its way to being gone but still early enough that the sun was still setting in the late afternoon versus evening.Lighting
There isn't much to share about lighting, the setting sun, reflections off the ice and water, perfect lighting was provided for me. I just had to compose, hit the shutter, and enjoy the view.Equipment
I shot this with my Canon Rebel, the 135 mm kit lens, and hand held. I was up to my ankles in snow on the beach by the waters edge but if I held my breath it slowed the shivering long enough to steady the camera. Because of the snow, wind, and temp I chose to leave the METAL tripod in the car. It was still cold from the drive and I didn't want to touch it. I also arrived at the beach just in time and didn't want to waste any precious minutes on set up. I grabbed the camera out of my bag and ran.Inspiration
Long Island sunsets rarely fail to amaze and the need to capture them is great. This one however was spectacular and has for me become the one by which all others are compared. This sunset also opened the doors to a group of people with like minded pursuits. After uploading my shot a very similar one came up in my feed. So similar I thought it was mine. It was taken by a photographer that was only a few yards away from me. The color, angle, everything so similar I had to reach out to him hoping he would see the humor as I did. And he did. After all, it's not everyday that you stand on a beach in the frigid cold, bundled up in down all the way to your nose next a perfect stranger that isn't actually a stranger but a fellow Viewbug member! After chatting through Viewbug he led me to groups on Facebook that go out together on photo excursions, sunsets, sunrises, tailgates, abandoned places, etc. One shot opened up a whole new world to me, literally.Editing
A Lightroom vignette, that is all that was needed :)In my camera bag
Now, a Canon 6D (an upgrade to the Rebel this was shot with), cross body strap, macro lens with one extension tube, 10 yr old Tamaron 200mm, extra batteries, 2-3 SD cards, hand wipes, weather cover for the camera, and in the winter, hand warmers. Summer always includes chap stick, hand cream, water, and cash.Feedback
Patience. With a sunset the best part of it is usually in the minutes after the sun is well below the horizon. Enjoy the sunset as much as you do photographing it. It shows in the end result. And play with your settings. There is no standard setting when there are so many environmental variables.
