Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the beach in france, near La Rochelle. I remember I was scouring the beach for photos, when I saw this pit which someone had dug during the day - well turns out this pit is ideal to stand in and take photos of the gulls around you, without them noticing you! It was all a bit bizarre.

Time

I remember it was sometime in the early evening, when the beaches are mostly empty, and yet the sun is not yet setting. It was so calm and moody, the long grass on the outskirts of the sandy beach, the few dog walkers walking their dogs in the evening. It's a wonderfully mysterious time.

Lighting

It was a beautiful time of day, in the evening but before the sunset turned the landscape red, and so I had gorgeous gold light falling on the gulls.

Equipment

I shot the gulls freehand, leaning my arms against the edge of the pit. My 18-200mm lens came in very useful at this point, as I could zoom in on the birds without them noticing me.

Inspiration

I was looking to capture the essence of the seaside - and what better than shooting seagulls on the beach?

Editing

In post I decided to really pull out the details in the gulls and the sand, and I added some colour to the sand using the light room masks. I brightened the photo quite a bit, to make it seem more lively.

In my camera bag

Usually I avoid lugging gear with me past what's around my neck. Today, I left my 35mm and tripod at home, and set out with just my D5200 and 18-200. I prefer my gear to tell me what types of photos I can take, as I can then simply take them, without having to worry about switching lenses or the similar. Or maybe I'm just lazy?

Feedback

I would recommend being patient and picking a good background composition. Then wait for something interesting to happen in the foreground, and boom - you've got a great photo!
