Location
This shot was taken on the southern Oregon Coast, which is famous for it's coastal free standing rock formations.Time
I wanted to capture both a lower tide and Eastern light, so this is a morning shot. Cloud cover can be very variable in Spring, so the morning was the best opportunity for light and tide.Lighting
The attitude of light (Eastern), and its 'freshness' were what I was after here.Equipment
Canon 5d3, tripod, about 30mm set on stock 24-105mm zoom.Inspiration
I had seen and heard of great coastal photography on this part of the Oregon Coast, so was interested in seeing this for myself. Well worth it.Editing
Shoot RAW so you can control the mental image you had of your experience. Ultimately all photography is a personal experience which you are trying to recreate within the confines of a technology limited medium. Then work your favorite post processing software and experiment to see how you can build an image. I work in Photoshop primarily (though with other software as well), using curves, clarity, shadow and highlight manipulation, some saturation and sharpening. Remember Ansel Adams words on manipulating the image to achieve the effect. In my camera bag
Canon 5d3 and increasingly Sony A7riii with kit zooms, wide angle zooms and a long zoom. I work less with tripod, though I generally carry one. Always trying to control weight and flexibility as I explore. UV and gradient filters are always important bits in landscape work.Feedback
Get out there. Look at lots of photography and treat it as inspiration, then trust your own vision.
