Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Tillamook State Forest in Oregon in early Fall.

Time

Approaching sunset, the light was still hitting the mountain in the background while the river and forest in the foreground were in shadow.

Lighting

Blending multiple exposures allowed to see the details in the contrast.

Equipment

Canon 7D Mark ii, Tamron 16-300mm lens, changing shutter speed for multiple exposures.

Inspiration

Driving from Tillamook to Portland, the highway veers along the Wilson River in the Tillamook State Forest. As the sun was getting lower in the sky, I found a pullout site with a bridge leading over the river and began to take photos of the beautiful landscape.

Editing

Yes, I blended 3 exposures in HDR editing software to retain detail in both shadow and highlights.

In my camera bag

Canon EOS R, assortment of prime and zoom lenses, lens filters (ND, Polarizer, UV), tripod, lume cube panel light, intervalometer / shutter release.

Feedback

Patience is key with nature and wildlife photography. Always keep an eye on lighting, sunrises and sunsets can produce beautiful and dramatic lighting. Experiment with different techniques, ie: taking multiple exposures to blend in post-processing, or taking long exposures to show water flowing.
