The pohutakawa is known as the New Zealand Christmas tree because its riot of stunning red flowers tend to start blooming at that time of year...just in time to provide a good feed of nectar for the young bellbirds. The acrobatic nature of these wee birds can clearly be seen here as this juvenile hangs upside down to feed.
