Location
This photo was shot a my favourite place in my home town of Hartlepool, North Sands. It is the old, and now derelict, pier from Steetley Magnesite, a former magnesium works on the coast of the town. The pier is now all that remains of this once giant site.Time
The best time, late afternoon. The Northeast coast of England always offers ample oppourtunities for fantastic photos. Be it wild waves, stunning sunsets, or coastal oddities such as this. The industry the region is historically famous for is slowly disappearing. Things like this pier, old bunkers, railways into the sea are a reminder of the towns industrail past.Lighting
Just mother nautre herself. The sun was playing hide and seek on this day but it made for a fantastic atmosphere.Equipment
A Samsung Galaxy tab 2, further edited on an s5. Im continually astounded by the images that can be captured and created on todays mobile technology.Inspiration
The pier. Its been there all of my life and will stand until im long departed I imagine! The beach it resides on is one of my favourite places, plus I was forever exploring the old site before it was completley demolished. It resembled something from another world. It was a hauntingly beautiful place. It did however cause many an injury to townsfolk, People swimming in the polluted settling tanks, people falling through the pier. So much so a section was removed leaving a gap so no access was possible without extreme climbing and navigating.Editing
Yes indeed! Samsungs stock photo editor to create the mirror/diagnol effect, followed by a little HDR tweaking to emphasise the 'grandioseness' of this fanastic structure. In my camera bag
Whatever Mobile/Tablet Im currently using. A Samsung S4 at the moment. That and a packet of Parma violets!Feedback
Shooting Piers is always a joy, there are many ways to do so, on top, underneath, angled, landscaped etc. I always look for the extraordinary in the ordinary. Shooting head on, slightly angled up really shows the size of the structure. Be aware of the lighting too, mood is pivotal when shooting piers, I feel.
