Behind The Lens

Location

I went for a stroll through the wind farm on Mount Lucas bog, which consists of 1,100 hectares of cutaway Peatlands near Daingean, Co. Offaly. The Mount Lucas bog forms part of the Derrygreenagh group of bogs that straddles the counties of Kildare, Offaly and Westmeath.

Time

It was taken sometime on a summer afternoon. I can't recall what time.

Lighting

Lighting was just natural sunlight and the sky was a bit cloudy.

Equipment

Nikon D5000 with stock lens and a tripod

Inspiration

I liked the leading lines of the old disused tracks through the bog and the modern wind turbines in the background. These tracks were used by trains of yesterday to bring peat to the power station. Then you have the modern turbines of today in the same bog providing green energy.

Editing

I took 3 shots stacked in HDR software and then edited in Lightroom

In my camera bag

Nikon D5000, couple of lenses and a tripod. I need to upgrade to a newer camera sometime soon.

Feedback

The starting point for any great landscape photo is your location. This means you have to start planning a shoot in advance to ensure you don’t waste time looking for it once you are on location. Decide on what and where you are going to shoot. Compose your shot, as long as you have planned your shoot well and have arrived at your location early, you should have enough time to really fine-tune your composition. If you want to capture the best possible photo, in the best possible light, you will have to use a tripod.
