I had let my Rottie out one last time before I went to bed. He didn't come when I called, but I heard him bark. Flashlight in hand (about midnight), I begin following the bark. I come upon my rottie making hamburger out of what appeared to be an adult possum. Thinking she had to be dead, I picked her up, whereupon her tail encircled my fingers. I couldn't believe she was still alive after the "chomping" treatment she had just received. I was going to take her to the house so my husband could bury her in the morning. However, upon passing an old doghouse, I heard leaves rustling. Investigating, I find some very small possum babies crawling around in the leaves! I found 11 babies! Went to the house and told my hubby...his answer was "Let them die". I couldn't do that since my Rottie had taken out the mother. Back out I go, and to my surprise, momma had crawled into the shelter and had nursed her babies with her final breaths. I was amazed that that was the last thing on her mind...pure motherhood at its finest. I removed 7 babies from her pouch, and gathered 4 more from the leaves. Took them back to the house and gave them a little milk with honey. They grew and finally I introduced them into the wild. These two are just so adorable, quite unlike an adult hissing possum! I just loved them so much! They were never afraid of people or dogs...just like little kittens...I love this photograph and hope you enjoy as much as I do...
