Behind The Lens

Location

Having travelled by steam train to the top of the Brocken in the Harz mountains I decided it would be great to capture the next train coming into the station.

Time

It was approximately 11am, -15 degrees and low visibility.

Lighting

The sun was having difficulty breaking through the haze of snow so the light was not at it’s best. However this created an eerie effect when the train approached and the red and black of the train was in deep contrast to the white of the snow.

Equipment

I actually think at the time I only had my old iphone 5 in my pocket. Why I hadn’t taken my Nikon with me I don’t know but it goes to show if you have the right subject you can make a good enough photograph.

Inspiration

The area all around me was white with snow, it was cold and visibility was low. I wanted to capture the contrast in colours and create a feeling of mystery

Editing

Yes, I slightly enhanced the red and lights of the train and tried to bring out as much of the sun as I could without losing the sense of eerieness with the snow.

In my camera bag

Phone, purse, keys????

Feedback

Just be prepared, you never know what nature will give you or what you can achieve with the simplest of shots. Don’t be afraid to try.
