Charak Puja also known to us as Nil Puja is observed on the last day of the week-long Gajan festival by the Bengalis. It is observed on the last day of Chaitra, which is the last month of the Bengali calendar.
The preparation for the festival starts a month prior to the celebration. Youths dress up as Lord Shiva and Parvathi, goes from house to house and perform the dance (a.k.a Shiv-Gourir Naach) to collect money from the families for the festival.
It is said that during Charak Puja, the dressed youths are possessed by the god. And until the priest wakes them up from the possession, they don't get their human consciousness.
