The station brings commuters from Sintra, with the last 2.6 km stretch being by a tunnel that is considered to be one of Portugal’s most important works of engineering of the 19th century. The station is unusual in that the platforms are some 30 metres above the main entrance and can be reached by escalators. Services from Rossio are all suburban trains to the tourist town of Sintra via Queluz. The station runs several trains to Sintra every hour, with the journey taking less than an hour
