Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia in April of 2017. I was out enjoying the gardens in the warm weather. The crocus were in full bloom and this hoverfly was hard at work pollinating.Time
I always try to get there early before the hustle and bustle of all the tourists arrive. This particular shot was just outside Bruton Parish prior to church services letting out for the day.Lighting
There was nothing special about the lighting, just taking advantage of early morning sun.Equipment
This was shot free hand with my Nikon D5300 and the 70-200 kit lens.Inspiration
The beauty of nature is that you can visit the same exact location day after day and there is always something new to see. I had no specific inspiration but a love of watching nature at work.Editing
There was minimal post processing, no correction of color or lighting but some cropping involved. In my camera bag
I've upgraded my equipment since this photo. I now primarily shoot with a Nikon D500 with either an 18-300 Nikkor lens or a Nikkor 200-500. I usually also carry my D5300 with a macro lens attached, Nikko 40 mm. I use both cameras so I don't have to change lenses when out in the field minimizing the risk of dust and such getting to the sensor. I also have both a monopod and tripod in the car. Never know which one I'll need!Feedback
When photographing nature the best advice I can give is to have patience. You can't predict what you're going to see so always look for opportunities and don't feel bad for missing a shot. Also, pay attention to the little things in your surroundings. It's great to see flowers, but if you look really close, there are often a variety of things on or in the flower!
