Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in one of my favourite national reserves in South Africa, the Hluhluwe Imfolozi National Park located among the rolling hills of Zululand. After days of rain I woke to this beautiful misty morning with the softest of light. The bush had turned green overnight and I could hear the excited chatter of the birds and the monkeys. Rain is always such a blessing in Africa. This photo was taken in January of 2017.

Time

This photo was taken in the early morning - the sun had yet to break over the horizon. The beautiful soft light was a photographers dream. My favourite time of the day.

Lighting

As we all know early morning light is generally soft and fantastic for photography. In this case it was also overcast and misty making the light even softer than usual. The rain of the previous days had also scrubbed the air the colours seemed particularly vivid as a result.

Equipment

Took this pic on my Nikon D810 with a 24 mm f1.8 lens. The light was good enough so that I did not need to use a tripod.

Inspiration

The contrast between the vivid green counter-posed with the blues and purple of of the background immediately drew my eye. The blanket of mist was particularly intriguing.

Editing

Pretty much just the usual - bringing RAW files into light room, a small amount of cropping, and perhaps some tweeks to colour saturation. This pic really did not require very much.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Nikon D810 and D750 bodies with a long lens (150-600mm telephoto), a wide angle (24mm) and a general purpose 70-200mm when I am out chasing wildlife. If I go out specifically for landscapes I will also have my tripod and filter kit with me.

Feedback

I shoot in Africa and the African sun is hot and harsh. This makes the morning and later afternoon golden hours especially important. This is also the time of day when a lot of wildlife is most active. When I am out in the bush, I generally do what the animals do during the heat of the day - find a shady spot and put my feet up.
