Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Promenade Lounge of the Disney Magic cruise ship while we were stopping in Key West, Florida. I was on vacation with my wife and two sons.

Time

This was taken in the morning after breakfast while we were in the Promenade lounge participating in an art project activity for the kids while we were waiting to dock at Key West.

Lighting

The lighting was pretty dim inside the ship and it was extremely bright outside, but the colors of the furniture and walls was something I really wanted to make sure I captured in the shot. It was an excellent decision because the photo captured the perfect moment.

Equipment

I usually use my Canon 5D for photography, but for the trip I had carried my Canon T6i so I can focus more on having fun with the family than carrying something heavy. I did bring a Canon Luxury lens which I used for the shot and I’m sure glad I had it. I didn’t have a tripod handy so I handheld the shot, and no flash was needed.

Inspiration

While my son was participating in the art even they were holding in the Promenade lounge, my wife noticed a sailboat outside. When I saw the boat, I instantly imagined that perfect shot, since the boat was headed towards the center of the porthole. I only had a few seconds to check my settings, get in place and wait. I snapped about eight shots. I scrolled thru the photos and knew I had a winner, thanks to my wife!

Editing

The only post processing I did was with Lightroom to remove some blemishes on the window and brighten up the exposure a bit.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Canon 5D along with a flash and some Canon Luxury lenses. For this trip I had replaced my 5D for my T6i due to weight.

Feedback

I believe it just takes some patience, skill and luck altogether to get the perfect shot, especially with these photos where timing matters. Every now and then you’ll take a photo that will turn into one of your trophy photos. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy photography
