Behind The Lens
Location
We were driving across the Napa Valley in California, looking for an obscure winery, when I glanced out the window and saw the valley full of vines.Time
Probably mid-morning, judging from the shadows on the vines and how long a drive it was from Santa Rosa where we were staying.Lighting
Yes, the light was harsh, but all that can be overcome within post-processing. I view the image as a starting point, my vision entails what I can accomplish with manipulation.Equipment
A Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 18-35 f/1.4 ART, my go-to combination in those days.Inspiration
California's wine-growing regions in the spring, are just so photogenic. And the image of the vines marching from the road all the way up and over the hillside was just so appealing.Editing
Absolutely. A combination of Adobe Lightroom9 to adjust exposure and highlights, then into Photoshop and Topaz Impression. In my camera bag
I am now shooting with the Nikon D850 with a SmallRig "L" bracket. Lenses are the Nikkor 28-300, my all-around lens, a Nikkor 14-35, Tamron 70-200 G2 plus a Sigma 20 mm Art for astrophotography. Kase magnetic filter kit, spare batteries, remote intervalometer, lens wipes, rocket blower, and various odds and ends. For tripods, a Really Right Stuff Versa Series 2 with Acratech Long Lens Hood and an RRS travel tripod with an Acratech ball hood. Everything is tucked into a Shimoda Exlpore V2 30L bag.Feedback
Look around when you drive through a region, pay attention to the play of light and clouds on a subject. Do not be afraid to experiment in post to get the look you want.
