Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on Sunday afternoon with little good light about, at Jeparit which is in the Wimmera District of Victoria, Australia.I was with my local Camera Club as an outing for that day.A few of us travelled across to do this shoot together.

Time

We went across to this town late afternoon and this was around 6pm. The day wasn't as warm as one would hope being in mid Summer and hence the light was not as good as we had hoped it would be. However I felt that it was still worth my while getting a shot or two of this old Bridge as who knows how much longer it will remain

Lighting

Even though we were in the Daylight saving time of year for us here in Australia, the evening seemed to be drawing in faster than what a hot Summers day should be, hence there was cloud and a cold wind blowing which made it harder to get good light on this image.Although when I took this shot, the clouds had disappeared for a time and while there were long shadows from some trees they didn't fall over the Bridge, making it easier to get a clear shot of the Bridge itself.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D7000 and the lens is a 24ml -120ml. Actually a lens for a full frame camera, but I love it on this cropped camera. I did use a tripod, especially important when it is windy and you need a good clean sharp image.

Inspiration

Being with a group of enthusiast gave me great motivation to visit this area. Also another factor was my childhood memories of travelling to this area and actually driving over the bridge as a child with my Mother and Father. Then of course it was in excellent condition and took what traffic was around in those days very well. Now with the increase in large Trucks and more cars it fell into disuse. Interestingly there is now another Bridge being built over there for the increasing umber of vehicles that go that way these days.

Editing

Yes, some post-processing was necessary. I shoot in RAW and have the ability then to edit to a fuller extent and if only shooting jpeg. I altered the light balance from Auto to Daylight, and while in camera raw, increased the clarity, shadows and highlights then adjusted the curves a little in Photoshop cc, finally some sharpening.

In my camera bag

I carry as much as I think I will need on the day in my bag. Sometimes if going birding, then the longer lens has to be carried separately. However in the bag is my Nikon D7000, and 24-120ml lens, plus my wide angle Sigma 12-24ml. Plus a variety of other smaller objects, torch, some filters, pen and pad. Remote release, cloth to clean lens, tissues etc Should I be on a different mission then a 50ml Nikon and a 70ml Macro Sigma lens.

Feedback

It is good if you know the area, but if not think about the time of day when something like this image will look it's best. Take a tripod as you will get a sharper picture. Try it from different angles and choose which you think is best when back home and editing your shot. Editing it in B/W or a monotone is also another suggestion. Doing it with friends adds more memories to you visit [if you are able] but however you go about it, have fun, maybe look up it's history and find what it's use was in times past. That way you will not only have the photo, but your knowledge will have increased and will mean more to you over time.
