A 6 foot Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) rests peacefully on the bayou bottoms of the Barataria Nature Preserve, in southern Louisiana. This particular water hole, under the boardwalks of the Bayou Coquille nature trail, is characterized by the rusty, tannin-stained waters from local Bald Cypress trees, and the dense Mud Minnow fish (Fundulus herteroclitus) populations within. The female Alligator pictured above, has claimed this small area as her home for the past 3 years.
