These soldiers died during the Battle of Franklin (Tennessee) November 30, 1864. Originally they were buried where they fell. The owners of Carnton, the McGavocks, donated this land, helped dig up the bodies on the battlefield, an buried them here. They made every attempt to identify the remains and kept a book that families used to locate their loved ones.
