The old town, Gamla Stan , until 1980 officially called the town between the bridges (Staden mellan broarna) — the historical centre of Stockholm, located on the island (Stadsholmen). Originally, the name "Stockholm" refers only to the Old town but as the city expanded, the name was extended to the whole territory of present-day Stockholm.
