Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at top of my room during my college time at Patna, Bihar in India.

Time

Night. At that time we were nocturnal beings, As students of Architecture, we always stayed up at night working or talking or doing this kind of experiments.

Lighting

I was really into long exposure and specifically Light art, lots of experiments on lights were done at that time. I got the concept in my head, had a very dangly tripod and the best part, Had a few friends who would understand my ideas, especially one guy who had amazing control on his hand, a real artist who made the wing beautifully. Rest is the background which was a newly under construction building of our college and the subject, my model friend who stayed as steady as possible.

Equipment

1. I used my Canon T5i with kit lens (18-58mm). 2. The tripod was a cheap aluminum one which was hardly holding the camera in place (fun fact- My camera along with the tripod fell just after this shot and the lens shaft got cracked which made the night more dramatic). 3. I didn't have a flash at that time but lights where used, one emergency led light and another mobile flash light. 4. Help from some friends.

Inspiration

At this point of life as students of architecture we came to understand the potential of art and creativity but the things we could do always had barriers In front of us and was a game of patience and time. We had wings but we couldn't fly. We are waiting inside a cocoon waiting to fly and do things we love, open up our wings which is our mind and make huge waves with our wings which is our art and creativity. Life inspired me to get to this concept at that young age at college, same as the subject in the photo I was waiting patiently to fly high.

Editing

Not much I just turned it to grayscale. I don't remember the exact details but some adjustments in Lightroom was done on highlights and shadows because at that time I was not much experienced on postprocessing, I just knew some basics.

In my camera bag

I have the same Canon T5i, 18-200 lens, 50mm STM prime lens. I also have a manual Flash kit , a tripod ( which is a little better one now), One action cam, which is not always in my bag.

Feedback

1. Having a few creative people around you can help you to make it better. 2. Plan the shoot and imagine the final frame before you go to capture it because this can save time and also make others understand it easily. 3. Keep on clicking until you get the best satisfying result, due to this have people who are close which can help make you more confident. 4. Have a good tripod. 5. Even if you get your shot , try more things which can help you understand more about light art.
