Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot on one of my many evening walks down to our city park which is named "Yoctangee Park".

Time

This was taken around 7:30PM in April. I could feel Spring trying to make its way in, but there was still a brisk end-of-winter wind. This night was pretty mild so my significant other and I went for our evening stroll after dinner (we do this a lot when we tend to overeat)!

Lighting

I wanted others to see this spot as I saw it. It was getting dark and the colors were calling out! There are some beautiful plants and trees around Yoctangee Lake so I wanted to make sure to get their reflection. Even with their beauty, sometimes the greenery and blooms can be a bit distracting from creating a simplistic reflection. Hence, why I went with the darker image. I also didn't want to take away from the sky which was the primary reason for this photo being born and it's what draws you in to view the reflection.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon EOS Rebel T3. f/5.6 1/30 sec. ISO-320 Focal length 21mm. Nothing else! I am a self-taught photographer, so I always assume I am behind the times with equipment. I have since upgraded a bit to a Canon 5D Mark II. I am very very happy with my upgrades in equipment, but I can now see that these older models can do the trick as well. You just have to know what view to capture and how to do so!

Inspiration

I grew up in this city of Chillicothe, OH (first and third capital of Ohio!) and this park has meant something to me in many different ways throughout my walk in life.I now live just up the street from this park so you see, I haven't gotten very far! I have traveled to many places near and far, and this spot calls to me still. It was actually my first and only shot at this part of the park. The colors in the sky were so vivid I couldn't resist.

Editing

Yes! Very minimal though. I did a little sharpening, and then I updated the general saturation. Now a days I would do more than that with little tweaking here and there, but that's really all I felt needed done to it.

In my camera bag

If I want my every day bag that's not heavy and I'm not doing any photo shoots, I typically just bring my Canon 5D Mark II and my Canon 50mm 1.4 lens. I couldn't afford the 1.2 and I'm okay with that. Right now, it's my hobby more so than a job because I have a full-time job. I take odds and ends jobs because I want to keep up on it all and I do hope to make something of it one.

Feedback

Don't try too hard! There is a time and place for working really hard I believe, but I found something that I was interested in and moved by, so I decided to take the shot. I certainly didn't plan for it. I just happened to take my camera with me on my walk, which I often do if I have time to stop and go, and there happened to be a beautiful sunset. It doesn't always work out like that, but sometimes it just does. That's why I love this photo. It's not the most brilliant out there, but to me, it's beautiful and brings to me good memories.
