Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park, California.

Time

I remember this being the first stop of the day on our geology field trip back in the spring of 2011. It must have been around 0900-1000 and no visitors lurking around meant an unobstructed view of the badlands.

Lighting

Having snapped this photo when I did, in the morning hours, the sun threw the perfect shadow over the crests of the badlands obscuring just enough to provide a nice contrast.

Equipment

I only carried a small point-and-shoot camera, a Panasonic LUMIX, on that trip. Needless to say, it produced some spectacular shots.

Inspiration

I knew about this iconic spot and wanted a nice photo keepsake, one I could always go back to, or get printed and hang up on my wall. It is such a surreal area with tons of natural history.

Editing

A slight increase in contrast and a little tweak in saturation in Adobe Lightroom did the trick.

In my camera bag

Currently, I tote around my Canon T5i and a 70D with a 50mm, 17-35mm, and a 70-300mm telephoto lens. A simple dolica tripod and a backup intervalometer. On top of spare batteries, ND filters, and a backpack to store it all in, I sometimes carry a GoPro as well.

Feedback

Nothing too profound here; get out there and start shooting some pictures. Try out different lighting conditions and play around with the settings and angles.
