Location
This photo was taken at my local beach where I lived. Toomulla Beach is located 48km north of Townsvile, Queensland, Australia, looking towards Ingham, Queensland over the ocean. I am a self taught photographer and lightning and storms are my favourite things to capture. Not only is it beautiful and thrilling to watch but to be able to share photos of them is equally exciting.Time
This is one of my favourite images. It was taken about 7.30pm. I remember it quite well because I remember seeing flashes from my house of a storm just north of us and I knew the best place to see it was at the "lookout". I stood on the lookout, and I was so appreciative that it wasn't raining because January was in our rainy season. And I had a spectacular view of the storm without any worry about using my camera in the rain.Lighting
I was really praying that the image had captured everything my eye was able to see. The detail in the cloud. The calmness of the water and the brilliant light show the storm was providing. I am always nervous about shooting at night, especially on uneven grouappincase I hurt myself. But thankfully, the area was constantly illuminated.Equipment
I use a Canon 600D with my 18-55mm lens. I used the manual setting I believe. I don't quite know the specific settings because I play with them a lot until I find one the suits my needs. And my tripod was also used because I certainly wouldn't of been able to control my excitement, holding my camera steady.Inspiration
I get so much adrendline taking photos of storms and lightning. I had set off by myself to capture what I could. It was such a lucky event not having to deal with rain and strong winds that would interfere with my session. I ended up ringing my family to come up and experience what I was seeing, with me. My father was also into photography and I believe that's where I got my passion from, so for him to be there with me to capture the moment and share the same excitement was one of my fondest memories.Editing
I used a little post processing. I take my images in RAW and at the time when I was transferring my images to my laptop, I found this one bright and clear. I used Photoshop to make it more vivid. I always try not to edit my images to much, I like to keep it as natural as possible. The image just needed a tiny boost to be able to view in the same way I was naturally able to view it. And I think I nailed it. The final image was exactly how I saw it that night. In my camera bag
My camera bag is pretty simple. You'll always find my Canon 600D in there with the 18 - 55mm lens and the slightly larger lens of 55 - 250mm. I also have a water bottle tucked into the outside of the bag. And some bits and bobs of random things I might forget whenever I go out.Feedback
I'm very big in "working things out myself" when it comes to photography. When I can't get it right. That's when I'll skim over a quick article on Google just to get a rough idea of how certain images come about on whatever settings. I am usually really good at having an idea in my head and making it happen. Dont over think it. Some of my best images are spontaneous. And always be patient with your equipment and with yourself. It's a journey and a beautiful one, so dont rush. Take the time to appreciate your surroundings and allow your mind to flow with creativity.
