Location
I photographed these two in the winter at the Detroit zoo where I worked. They had been together for years and developed an incredibly close relationship.Time
It was mid-day during a snow storm. It was quiet and the park was empty so I had the chance to be with them alone. They knew me and so were relaxed enough to ignore me. This moment happened as the snow began to fall.Lighting
The contrast of the two wolves was important to capture. By contrasting the fur of Kaska ("Romeo") against the girls white coat, I was able to show them against one another. The little kiss was luck.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D610 at around 150mm using natural lighting.Inspiration
I worked around these two for years. They were easily among my two favorite animals and their relationship was always beautiful to me. Sadly, "Juliet" had since passed away, and "Romeo" is getting on in years.Editing
I pushed the contrast to emphasize their coats against the snow and one another. In my camera bag
I'll shoot with whatever I have on hand. "The best camera is the one you have with you." Given the choice, Nikon D610 and 50mm prime, and 70-200 zoom. Covers the basics and provides options for most situations.Feedback
Patience. Animals don't take instruction. To get the shot you simply need to be present for the moment. If it doesn't work the first time, try again, go back the next day, learn to be quiet and try to capture what's happening.
