Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of the doorways into the abandoned South Fremantle Power Station. Over time it’s been harder and harder to get in there as it’s not exactly legal. While I’ll never jump a fence to trespass, the whole section of fence was rusted and fallen down so I walked in for a few shots and left.

Time

I mostly enjoy shooting at golden hour and at night. I love getting creative with light and letting the natural light do it’s thing

Lighting

This power station has had a few suicides committed inside, and it still has the eeriness about it when you’re there. When you stand outside, it’s almost inviting you to let your curiosity take over and go inside but as soon as you get to the threshold of the doorway, the creepiness hits you as you see all the broken glass and damage everywhere. I wanted this image to give the viewer that feeling. After processing the image I noticed the window at the end a little more and saw it as a reminder that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Equipment

I took this with a simple Canon EOS 1000 (I think) with one of the kit lenses. I don’t even know where the camera ended up to double check.

Editing

I don’t have the patience for post processing other than the basics like contrast, highlights etc. This one was easy, just make it black and white and up the contrast a little.

In my camera bag

Usually my camera, long lens and a shorter one like a 12-24mm. Depending what I’m shooting I might take a tripod as well as an off camera flash

Feedback

If you’re gonna sneak in, don’t get caught! Just have fun, take some shots of what makes it interesting and play with the settings
