This photo was taken in Dingle, Ireland, near the lighthouse on harbor. I was in Ireland as part of a study abroad program and took my camera with me everywhere I went.Time
I believe this was taken just after noon/early evening time.Lighting
Everyone knows that cloudy days are best for shooting outdoors. This day the sky was bright, but the clouds softened the light like a natural soft box, which made exposing for this picture a breeze.Equipment
Canon T3i. Kit lense. Handheld.Inspiration
I am a big fan of the Scottish rock band Buffy Clyro. Their album cover for “Opposites” features a bare, sideways growing tree. I thought at the time that it was just a cool piece of art, but then I stumbled upon this set of trees that looked just like the album cover! Sometimes life influences art that influences life again to make different art.Editing
Very little post work. Drop highlights for the sky. Lift the shadows for more details. Boost the saturation a little for contrast and cool the color temperature down to make it feel like the crisp Irish wind.In my camera bag
Now that I have my own gear I always take my 50mm and my 24mm. Extra batteries are a must have because I am always on the go. A tripod and an external shutter remote are incleuded for my astrophotography too.Feedback
Always bring your camera! Get over that feeling of “embarrassment” or “looking like a tourist.” There’s nothing wrong with being a tourist. There’s nothing wrong with other people knowing you’re a photographer. Always take the picture. Be a fan of things and let them influence your way of thinking, because then maybe on some cloudy day, in a place far from home, you’ll see a tree that reminds you of your favorite band and you’ll be able to capture the moment when you felt like you belonged.
