Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot on of the cycloramas in my Studio in Arizona.

Time

Midday- as this was indoors time really not important.

Lighting

Simple lighting, two strobes shot into backdrop. The key is where you place the chair. Too far forward and you lose the wrap and the edge details fade to black. Too far back and you can lose the silhouette look.

Equipment

Been a while since I took this so not sure which body I was using. Sure it was Canon, but other than that, don't recall. No tripod. Dual AB1600 strobes.

Inspiration

I was thinking back to flash dance movie and thought this would be fun. Not the same as the water splash in the film, but it has the feeling.

Editing

Post was minimal, just bumped the contrast up and converted to B&W.

In my camera bag

Typically I have my Canon 5DIII in the bag with the 24-105L on it. Then depending on where I am headed, I might throw in 70-200 2.8L, or fisheye or one of my wide angle lenses. Always have a flash, spare batteries, charger and extra memory cards. And the usual filters CPL and ND. If I am going to remote areas I have a usb battery to recharge phone just in case.

Feedback

Timing is everything. One of the keys is the bend to the leg to get a bit of light between the knee and the thigh. Also the arch of the back with hair fly. Have the model in final position to start so she knows what she is trying to achieve. Then lean forward, pull all the hair in front of face and then flick back on 3 count. With practice I can usually get this shot in 3 or 4 attempts.
