Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my first day in Füssen, Germany, a small Bavarian village less than a mile from the Austrian border. I was standing on a bridge overlooking this waterway towards the mountains just a short walk from where I was staying.

Time

It was definitely during golden hour, around 6 or 7 PM when this image was taken.

Lighting

Golden hour is obviously a prime time to shoot, but with this scene I got particularly lucky because the light was diffused even more because it was at that sweet spot just behind the peaks. With the mountains there, it allowed me to shoot with an exposure that worked out easily for both the subject and the sky and gave me a blueish foreground, all which made the image a bit more painterly and required less work in post.

Equipment

I shot this on my Canon MKIII with a 16-35mm 2.8 lens that was pretty old and had some focusing issues.

Inspiration

When I arrived to Füssen, the place I was staying was locked and I ended up having to climb a tall fence to get to the door. That was locked too, and it made me even more eager to just set out and see what was around. I tied my bag to a plant set beside the front door and climbed the fence again with my camera and left. The scene itself was an obvious thing to take a picture of, but I've also noticed that any landscapes I shoot end up looking like some of the paintings in my house growing up, so maybe there's a subconscious element there. I also just love documenting my life and the scenes that leave me most in awe, and I spent a good amount of time just looking at this scene and eventually exploring it before even taking the image.

Editing

I actually just edited this on my iPhone using a combination of VSCO and Afterlight because I didn't take my computer with me on this trip.

In my camera bag

On a standard day I carry my Canon MKIII, a 24-70mm 2.8, a 50mm 1.4, a Canon EOS 3 35mm camera and a Canon AE-1, an old flash, some star lens filters, some extra batteries, and memory cards.

Feedback

This is an example of observing the scene and being patient with the light, all I did was simply wait and take the shot. Being present, observant, and patient are probably some the most important things for a shot like this.
