Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the shore of Lake Superior, in front of the historic Lutsen resort in Northern MN.

Time

It was later in the evening, just as the sun dipped behind the tree line behind us. We were getting ready to leave and I wanted to get some shots of Lake Superior. I turned to the southwest and saw this couple standing on the rock.

Lighting

The sunset and the clouds did all the work for me. I pulled the shadows down a bit in post processing to enhance the natural silhouette that was created by the sun setting.

Equipment

I used an Olympus OM-D EM5 Mk I, with the 25mm f 1.8 lens

Inspiration

I rarely take photos of people, and often wish I could have the landscape to myself with no strangers in it. This moment seemed to tell a story, and the anonymity of the couple gives the viewer the sense that that could be any couple their imagination wishes it to be.

Editing

I sharpened the image a bit in Photoshop and pulled the shadows down a bit to enhance the silhouette and balance any unevenly shaded areas. I didn't have to enhance the colors in the clouds, Minnesota sunsets just look like that all by themselves.

In my camera bag

I have upgraded my EM5 to the OM-D EM1 Mk I, and my lens selection is still the 25mm, 12mm, and the 14-150 zoom. I have a few other specialty lenses but these are my most often used workhorses.

Feedback

I have to constantly remind myself to be open to the scenes that present themselves to me. I often have a vision in my mind that I want to capture, but especially with landscape shots, I don't always get what I'm after due to not being able to control the lighting and the weather. But if I keep my eyes open and my limited preferences at the back of my mind, I often find something just as lovely, like this couple.
