Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Berlin-Pankow, where I lived at this time.

Time

This photo was taken at 1:05am on a rainy night in November, 2010 when I was on my way home after a student party.

Lighting

The Wollankstr. in Pankow can be very dark at night. Beside from the soft street lamps the biggest light sources are cars. So in this shot. The direction of the car light gave the pedestrian a nice dark silhouette. The scene reminded me immediately on the classic pictures of the 60s.

Equipment

I used a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM and Canon EOS 7D. Nothing else. This setup has been kind of my standard for 2 years.

Inspiration

At this time I startet my design study and I was also part of a photography class in progress. I has been very impressed by the work of Henry Cartier Bresson so was keeping an eye for comparable moods on my everyday-journeys.

Editing

Of course I converted the picture to black and white and I also cropped it to a square format. But nothing else. In case of editing I'm very minimalistic. I try to do less as possible.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I use a Sony a7III with 5 different lenses. When I shoot private I only use one of these lenses per day and the lens I use the most is a Sony FE 24mm F1.4 GM. This focal length seems to be the most "modern" option when it comes to shoot many different things at one day. I have the feeling I could shoot every genre with a 24mm. But I also like my other ones - a Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L (via adapter) for very architecture-centric days, a Sony FE 35mm F1.8 and a Sony FE 55mm F1.8 Sonnar ZA T* for street photography and portraits. My least used lens is the Sony FE 85mm F1.8, which I only use for documentary photo-jobs.

Feedback

Have your camera every day in your bag or better in your hands. Don't be afraid of failing many times. When you take at least one nice picture in many many hours it's worth it. Black and white movies are sometimes a good source for inspiration or at least a drive into a nostalgic mood which can change your sight for beauty in the ordinary life. Be open for feedback. Don't be too complacent but also not too strict with yourself. Don't take pictures not for a contest. Only for yourself. It's all about expressing your feelings.
