This photo was taken at the Ra Paulette sand cave in Ojo Caliente, NM on a tour offered through the Origin Lodge.
Our tour guide told us that Ra used the space in an attempt to find inner peace. He carried each pane of glass to the cave by himself (which I must admit wasn’t the easiest hike only carrying a camera). Unfortunately, pictures were not permitted inside the cave, but you should visit if you get the chance. It was stunning.
I was initially going to take a picture of the cave through the window, but I caught a glimpse of the valley and this was the result.

Location
This photo was taken at the Origins Lodge in Ojo Caliente, NM. There are a handful of caves carved by Ra Paulette in the U.S., but this happens to one of the few accessible to the public. There was a fee to see the cave, but it was well worth the money.Time
If I remember correctly, this was around 10 a.m. Our AirBnB was not nearby, so we had to be up relatively early to get there before it was too hot.Lighting
I believe the sun was on the other side of the cave, so there was no harsh sunbeams to compete with. It was a beautiful day with very few clouds in the sky, which provided good lighting.Equipment
This was taken with my Canon 40D using the 18-55 mm kit lens, no flash.Inspiration
This picture came about because cameras were not permitted inside the cave. I was initially going to take a picture through the window because it was so beautiful that I knew I needed pictures of the carvings, but when I caught a glimpse of the valley reflection, I snapped that instead. When I got back to my computer to review my photos, I was not disappointed!Editing
The only post-processing I did was crop the picture. I felt the photo was beautiful as is and did not feel the need to modify it further. In my camera bag
This picture was taken before I knew much about my camera (I was still shooting in auto mode!), so all I had with me was my camera and the 18-55 mm kit lens it came with.Feedback
Keep your eyes peeled for reflections, you never know what you’ll see!
