Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the Mystic River in Southeastern Connecticut.

Time

This was probably mid-day in January; I do love the lighting and feeling of winter days for shooting.

Lighting

Originally I shot this in color, but the angle of the sun in January in Connecticut sets up really nice lighting for a black and white image. The contrast of the seagull with the darker wood in this lighting really worked.

Equipment

I own a Sony A77ii and at the time I had just obtained a Tampon SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 telephoto lens. I had brought it out to that day to get a feel for how it shot.

Inspiration

I had just stopped off the side of the road and was looking at the river. I caught this seagull just perched and it just felt like it was surveying the river as well, trying to stay warm. The picture conveyed a winter sunny day to me - great light but cold!

Editing

The biggest post-processing I did here was changing the photo to black and white. Just felt it had a better mood and captured the cold of the day.

In my camera bag

This really depends on where I'm going - I run the gamut from macro to landscape. And actually those are my two favorite types of photography - I like the scale of macro and the complexity of landscape...and I find I can shoot either anywhere I go. So, I typically carry my multi purpose telephoto lens (Sony 18-250mm f/3.5-6.5) and my macro lens. I also bring my grip for longer battery life and a tripod.

Feedback

I'm still trying to figure out my own style, so I tend to try to shoot different types of subjects. I would say practice - plan time to just take the camera out and see what you see. I actually go on 'photo walks' just to get myself shooting and trying new things.
