Location
This photo was taken on my family's farm during the Thanksgiving holiday. I am a self taught photographer so I always like to play with angles and take different styles of pictures. The trees in this photo are located by a field we used to grow tobacco in when I was growing up.Time
It was after Thanksgiving dinner and everyone was sitting around talking and enjoying the time with family. I decided to take a walk around the farm to reminisce on the days of growing up there. When I looked up at the trees on the path I was on, it reminded me of laying in the shade when we would take breaks from priming the tobacco in the field beside us. So I took an angled picture. In doing so, I feel I captured something beyond nostalgia. When I look at this picture, I get a sense of mystery. Almost dreamlike. Perhaps a sense of being lost, like forgotten memories. This picture was taken in the late afternoon, just before dusk.Lighting
The lighting for this photo was just right. It was cloudy outside, and like I mentioned, just before dusk. I felt this added to the mystery aspect of the photo. Not too bright, not too dark.Equipment
The camera I used was a Nikon D5100 with a 35-55 mm lens. Nothing special or fancy here. I did not use any flash as I like to capture natural light.Inspiration
As I mentioned before, looking up at the trees reminded me of growing up on the farm and priming tobacco with my family. Tobacco farming is very hot and dirty work. So when we would take a break, I would sometimes lie under the trees in the shade. Before I was old enough to help with the tobacco, I remember playing in the sand under the trees with my toy tractors and dolls, mimicking what my family was doing in the fields.Editing
When editing this photo, I played around with the contrast and lighting. Like I said, I am a self taught photographer, so I like to experiment with different settings. In my camera bag
I do not own any special equipment. I have a Nikon D5100 and a couple of lenses. As previously stated, nothing special, just the basics.Feedback
My advice to others wanting to capture something similar, just try. Try this. Try that. Try it all. Try things that are different and out of the ordinary. Not everyone has to be the same or do the same. Pay attention to angles, lines, and curves. Position your camera in a way that feels comfortable and pay attention to the lines in your viewfinder. I feel like so many photographers want or feel like they have to follow a certain set of rules. I, on the other hand, just shoot what I like or what looks good to me. It helps me to be creative and learn along the way.
