Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home garden, this photo is of a female black swallow tail butterfly. She was later seen laying eggs on a parsley plant in the garden. I'm always taken back when the garden I have created attracts pollinators like the black swallowtail butterfly. I always take a moment to appreciate the connection we all have.

Time

This was taken late afternoon, with my iphone. I take all of my photos with my phone, as I have it with me at all times. I find I capture some amazing moments. Being present in the now.

Lighting

Early morning and late evening are the best times, But with the sun behind me, I'm able to truly see the magical colours from mother nature.

Equipment

I used my iphone, its truly with me at all times, so I can capture the moments, without much set up. no lens, no tripod, no flash... Just a steady hand and a good eye.

Inspiration

I take mostly photos of insects, flowers, and landscapes. As a horticulturalist, and naturalist, I enjoy being in nature, and capturing moments, and memories. I surround myself with beauty every day, and am lucky enough to capture some of those moments to carry with me.

Editing

I dont do any processing. I tend to take many photos, and pick the best of the bunch. In this case, I was only able to take a couple, before she headed off to another garden. Although our time was fleeting, it left a lasting impression.

In my camera bag

I only have my iphone...

Feedback

Learn how to be unobtrusive. Learn how close you can get without scaring away what you are looking at. Don't be afraid to take a number of photos, and don't be afraid to take your time. Over time, the number of photos needed becomes less, the cropping becomes unnecessary, and the photo you are trying to capture, improves. Be passionate about what you are photographing... If you like flowers, take flower photos, if you like shoes, take shoe photos. You will always find your subjects best side, when you are looking at it through passionate eyes.
