This picture is from my Zodiac series. It was taken in my home studio - at that time in my living room. I had an exact concept in my head. I also sketched it on a sheet of paper. I do that for all my personal, fine art projects. I like underwater photography but I have never shot under water. I knew that if I was to create this picture (without underwater equipment) I had to take a series of photographs that can be stitched together into one. I needed to capture both figures, flying dresses, feet in the air,...Time
It was studio light so the time of a day wasn't important. The pictures were taken 2.8.2015, the first at 14:21 and the last at 14:58. It took only a half an hour because I knew exactly what I wanted to capture - I took about 150 shots (yes, I still have them all).Lighting
I used a studio flashlight with a softbox positioned quite high above the model. I was thinking how would the light look like if it was coming from above water. I was careful not to move the light so that the pictures fit together.Equipment
I used my old Canon 450D with a kit lens (I was such a baby! :)). I had to use a tripod to make my post-processing easier. And for my flash, I used a remote trigger.Inspiration
In 2015 I decided to make a calendar where I portraited twelve zodiac signs. This picture is my favourite, it was the first that came to my mind and is probably the most complex. I was inspired by Brook Shaden and her approach to fine art photography.Editing
There was a lot of post-processing involved. The photoshop file has about 50 layers, it is a quite big composite. I learned a lot working on it. The speedup process of me stitching it together is on youtube: https://youtu.be/M5_eMBbtR_sIn my camera bag
What is in my bag depends on what I'm shooting. If I'm shooting a wedding, there are two Canon 5D mark III, a lot of batteries and memory cards. Canon 85 1.8, Canon 24-105 4.0 L, Canon 50 1.8, Sigma 1.8, some flashes, the usual... But I really love old lenses so if I'm in a mood for some flowers or pretty things I take my Helios 44 2.0, use an adapter or just freelens and make some dreamy shots. I also enjoy film photography.Feedback
With these kinds of pictures, it is important to know what do you want to create. With fine art and composites, it is helpful if I sketch my idea. It helps me not to forget about anything and also to describe to the model what I want from her and why I need her to jump several times or do other weird things. I usually know the mood of the final picture, colours and composition before I start taking pictures. With that being said it doesn't mean that I can't change my mind.
