Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my kitchen, I had been surfing Youtube and had seen a couple videos on something similar so tried to find some reflective plastic to put the glass on, and then a sheet behind for my flash to diffuse it slightly. Then trial and error until I managed to get the ice cube dropped into the glass at the right time!

Time

This was done mid day on a weekend, when my kids were able to help with the set up - tripod, flash, background support, white sheet etc.

Lighting

The flash was aimed down behind a white sheet to hit both the glass and the plastic.

Equipment

Nikon D7000, 50mm F1.8 lens, tripod with remote trigger, synced flash, and background support with white background sheet.

Inspiration

I had done some water drop photos that turned out alright, but I wanted to capture something with a large splash as opposed to just a small water droplet. I had been watching some youtube videos that inspired this set up.

Editing

I used lightroom for my post processing, this was slighly cropped to really accentuate the background flash.

In my camera bag

Nikon D750, 50mm f1.8, 105mm f2.8, and a 70-200mm f2.8, two flashes, remote trigger, tripod, flash modifiers.

Feedback

Patience! Looking back on this I did close to 100 photos, just trying to get the lighting right as well as timing the ice cube hitting the water at just the right moment. It was all done by trial and error until I got the right shot!
