Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Itsukushima Shrine, an island not far from Hiroshima, Japan. It was taken on just before Christmas so there weren't a lot of tourists around as they were away during Christmas holidays. The deer in Japan tend to get quite close to humans as they associate them with food which is why their horns are filed down as they can get quite aggressive and attack people.

Time

This was taken around 3 PM as a last minute trip after doing an early day tour in Hiroshima. It was peaceful and not so crowded in comparison to the city. It must have also helped that it was late in the day already and day light usually only lasts until 4 PM in the winter. I was quite lucky to have been able to get a ferry across to the island at this time and still have enough sunlight to take pictures of the shrine.

Lighting

As an amateur photographer that only takes pictures as a hobby while travelling, I can't really say I put much thought in the lighting for this picture. I'm honestly quite surprised that this photo has been chosen to be featured but seeing this is probably the first time I'm properly taking pictures with a decent camera, I'm quite honoured and flattered that a picture of mine is being featured. It does help though that the cloud wasn't completely covering the sky so enough sunlight came through for me to take pictures with a standard shutter lens.

Equipment

Taken with a Samsung NX1000 18-55 mm lens, fx 3.6 ISO 600. No other equipment were used.

Inspiration

I wanted to take a picture of the shrine on its own and was waiting for the passer-by's to clear the shot but when the deer got close, I took my opportunity to take the picture with the deer and the shrine in the background. It was an unexpected turn of event that I will always remember when looking at this picture.

Editing

Other than adding a simple filter to make the picture clearer and adjusting the lighting to make it brighter there were no other post-processing involved.

In my camera bag

I usually have my spare batteries in case it runs out, a spare memory card in case I forgot to take my memory card out of my laptop, and a 50-200 mm lens for my Samsung NX1000. I miss that camera!

Feedback

I would advise to go on a clearer day to get a beautiful shot of of the shrine, maybe early in the morning when there aren't as many tourists as well. Wait for the perfect time when a deer comes close maybe by luring them in with a biscuit that is sold by the street vendors and lastly, enjoy your time there.
