Astorga - Cathedral - Detail
The Cathedral of Astorga, dedicated to Santa Maria, is the episcopal seat of the diocese of Astorga, documented since the third century with the title of Apostolic. It is located in the city of Astorga, province of León (Spain).
Before the present building there existed a pre-Romanesque temple and another one of Romanesque style consecrated in the year 1069, that could perhaps be finished in the middle of the thirteenth century, without much information of its construction. The present cathedral began to be built by the head in the 15th century (1471) in Gothic style (ships and chapels) and continued in the following centuries with the south facade and two chapels perpendicular to the nave in Renaissance style and the main façade in baroque Of the eighteenth century. The Gothic work has possible links with the architects Juan de Colonia and its son Simón de Colonia in what refers to the original construction, being attributed the work of century XVI to Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón.1
It is of basilical plant with three naves that extend on the Romanesque plant and chapels between buttresses and three poligonal apses; The vaults are of crucería. The pillars that support them do not have capitals but they are prolonged joining with the nerves of the same ones. It has two square towers at the feet, with slate spiers.
