This photo was taken in my grandparent's home in Kansas City, MO. They have a bar room, which has been frequently used as the "man cave". This is where my grandfather's friends and family come to chat, play chess, and visit him.Time
This photo was taken one late evening after a few bouts of chess with my grandfather. It was getting late and about to go home and I decided to take this photo before I headed home.Lighting
The lighting is very unique. A combination of bar room lights, and wall mirrors created a great luminous aura. With a little positioning with my camera and using the mirror behind as a reflector in a way, I was able to catch this wonderful photo.Equipment
I was using a Canon Rebel t5, with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS II lens, and good steady hand.Inspiration
Chess has always been a part of my life since I was very little. My stepfather first taught me how to play around the age of 9. Over the years I practiced and practiced. While I may not be as good as I hope, it's still the adventure of "strategically going to war" with a friend. A battle of wits, and cunning. This ambition grew, and I always liked a new challenger. When my grandfather met my grandmother and got married I discovered he too was an avid chess player. Through the years he taught me many different aspects of the game. He never had an expensive marble or metal set. Just a simple plastic set he probably got for free.Editing
Post processing was done in Lightroom CC. Just like my grandfather's set, I kept it very simple. Saturation came down to 0 and then blacks came down, and whites came up.In my camera bag
I usually pack my two Canon DSLRs, and then a Canon film camera. They all come with a 18-55mm lens. I have my Canon 75-300mm lens also just in case of seeing something that catches my eye from a distance. I also pack enough film for days on end. You never know how much film you might use!Feedback
Take the time out of the day for the simple captures. This shot was taken right after finishing a calm game of Chess with my grandfather. I had no intention to get a capture that day, but I enjoyed the experience so much I wanted to keep this moment of time for myself and it ended up being an amazing photo!
