Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Marcoola Beach which is on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia.

Time

I took it at 7.37pm on Monday the 14th of November 2016. This evening was the rising of the "biggest" super Moon of 2016 and for the previous 68 years. The Moon was the closest it had been to Earth since January 26, 1948. And apparently it won't be as close as this until November 25, 2034.

Lighting

The moonlight was the only light source used to get the natural look.

Equipment

I mounted my Canon EOS 700D on a Vanguard tripod I picked up at an Op-Shop for $10. It was the first time I'd used this particular one. I don't recall whether I used my Canon lens or Tamron lens nor which size it was.

Inspiration

I ran out of a meeting to catch the supermoon rise without an exact destination in mind as it was an reasonably unfamiliar area to me. I just headed as far East as I could trying to get to the beach and stopped where it felt right. When I parked on the road alongside the beach and walked down a track to find my way to the shore I was pleased that it was a short walk of only about 20 metres. There were probably about 30 other people on that section of dune at the end of the track waiting for the Moon to show. I had thought I was late for the rise, and I was, but it didn't matter as the Moon had not shown herself yet due to cloud and haze close to the horizon over the sea. I was able to set up just in time to get some shots at her first appearance. After the crowd had seen her and left, I found myself alone on the beach and in my full-moon excitement I had the idea to document how I was feeling about this awesome glowing orb and after pressing the shutter release on a long exposure I ran around and jumped in the shot posing, trying to keep as still as possible. Obviously I wasn't perfectly still but they turned out alright enough to catch my intention.

Editing

This shot was very minimally processed in Photoshop. It was a while ago now but I'm fairly sure I only erased a small about of lens flare from the front centre of the photo.

In my camera bag

I have two camera bags that I swap between. Both usually have: a camera (either my Canon 450D or 700D), 450D kit lenses and/or a Tamron or two. I always try to have a few spare charged batteries and spare memory cards. Cleaning cloth, brush and lens hoods. One bag also has a remote shutter release. I think I'll start taking both bodies more often so I can have a short and long lens on the go at the same time to save that frustration of not having the right one at hand for swift subject changes.

Feedback

Being an amateur photographer with limited training and experience, my advice is to click lots, experiment and see what happens. But most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!
