Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken above the docks in Cattolica, a small town facing the Adriatic coast, in Italy.

Time

The shot was taken just before the sunrise. I woke up at 4:30 am in order to be on the spot early enough to get a general idea of which kind of composition I wanted. Being just few days before Christmas the temperature was few degrees below zero with some cold wind, making the whole shooting session quite tough. However it was defintively rewarding!

Lighting

The sun was just arising behing a cliff (from the upper right corner of the photo), but the sunrays were not lightining the scene yet. This allowed to have a general blue tone on the scene, that boosts the green shades of the water.

Equipment

I used the DJI drone "phantom 4", without any extra filters on it.

Inspiration

I was inspired by Michael Kenna for this picture, even if many of his photos are much more essential. Nevertheless I wanted to transmit the same feeling of order and calm.

Editing

I only added some contrast and saturation during postprocessing. I wanted to underline the simmetrical disposition of the boats and the color ofthe water.

In my camera bag

After trying different kinds of photography, I chose the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 and the Nikon 50mm 1.8 as my favorite lenses with a D610 as body. When I go out hiking on the alps, I also take the Tokina 11-16 pro with my old Nikon 5100 to be able to use this lenso also at 11mm. I also use Lee ND filters and a carbon fiber Manfrotto (Model MT055CXPRO3) as tripod for long exposure photos. Recently also my DJI drone became part of my photo equipment and I often take it out with me.

Feedback

I find extremely important to be aware of the surroundings every time we go out. We might notice some details or locations that would give us a chance for a great photo, if taken at the right moment. Therefore it is not unusual going to thesame places during different parts of the day. I was walking around the docs for a couple of days, trying to collect as many particulars as I could with my eyes and then, once at home, elaborating them to find what would could be the best composition. With this procedure it was much easier to achieve the final result in the shot, as I had already in mind which kind of elements I wanted to be in my frame.
