Broken gravestones, invasive bamboo, and wild overgrowth set a haunting scene at the abandoned St. Chad's Anglican Church at Mt. Pleasant, Trinidad. Mt.Pleasant is the remains of an 18th-century British colony that has long fallen out of use.

Location
This photo was taken while I was living abroad, teaching in Trinidad. The photo is of St. Chad's Anglican Church, which is a cultural heritage site in the Chaguaramas region of the island. Since the abandonment of the church, the site has become overgrown with weeds and bamboo. The broken crosses and moss covered walls provide an eerie feeling while exploring the site.Time
My family made the trip down to Trinidad, from Canada, to visit my husband and I, and while they were visiting, we tried to show them as many sights around the island that we could. On Tucker Valley Road, where St. Chad's is located, there are several hiking trails, a waterfall, and a nice beach for snorkeling. This photo was taken on our way out of the valley, around mid-day. Hiking in Trinidad is best done in the morning before the temperature gets too hot, and after a morning of hiking, we stopped at St. Chad's to let my family experience the haunting beauty of the site.Lighting
The original colour version of the photo only uses full, overhead, mid-day sun.Equipment
This was shot using a Canon IXUS 220HS, Aperture: 45/10, ISO: 100, Shutter Speed: 1/250; no other equipment was used.Inspiration
I had taken several photos of just the church and the crosses on their own, from different angles and trying different lighting. For this photo, I decided to completely change my angle to include the church behind the crosses and ended up with an amazing shot that tells a beautiful and haunting story.Editing
The original shot of this scene is in full colour; however, in post-processing, I decided that black and white would be much better suited to the story that I wanted the image to tell.In my camera bag
Nowadays, my main camera is a Canon EOS Rebel T5. I also pack my little Canon IXUS, but I use it as a back-up camera or if the larger camera is not practical. In my camera bag, you will also find a variety of lens filters: circular polarizing, FLD, graduated and various neutral density filters. I always carry extra SD cards and my chargers. I only ever carry a tripod if I know that I will be needing it.Feedback
My advise is to experiment with different angles; do not be afraid to get closer to the ground to see your subject in a new way.
