Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Ocean City, Maryland, on a beach retreat with my grade seven girls group from church. It was probably one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen, and as an amateur photographer, I was immensely pleased with the way the photos turned out.

Time

It was a beautiful summer weekend evening; the girls and I had dinner and then decided to see if we could catch a sunset. We were walking to a pier when this view caught my attention. The girls went on ahead while I played around in this spot with different angles and such.

Lighting

I had been wanting to play with silhouette, and this was the perfect opportunity. I like the way the colours ease into each other and the crispness of the grasses.

Equipment

I used my Canon PowerShot SX150 IS without a flash. I have no special lenses and no tripod; sometimes I steady my camera on a convenient ledge if I can, but in this case nothing was available so it was just point and shoot.

Inspiration

I love colour, and orange especially. This sunset was so vivid, I just had to try and capture it. Usually my efforts are sub-par - let's face it, the picture rarely measures up with the real thing! I was so pleased with my results of this effort; I felt like I really managed to capture the beauty.

Editing

I don't really have much in the way of post-processing tools. I don't recall exactly, but if there was anything, it was most like the "I feel lucky!" button on Picasa. :)

In my camera bag

The only things I carry are my beginner camera and my Samsung phone.

Feedback

I've learned when photographing sunsets to take many photos throughout the time it takes for the sun to set. The colours change continuously and quickly, and you're liable to get some lovely variety within the same shoot.
