The sun is about to rise over the horizon in this pine plantation forest. These red pines were planted by the CCC during the depression to prevent erosion and wildfires. The lumber industry in Michigan had taken all the white pines, white oaks and other trees in the rush to provide lumber for building homes and businesses. This lumbering ravaged the land and the planting of red pines in rows and columns, as man would plant a crop, now provides a vital asset to Michigan to manage and control. The markings on some of the tress are boundaries designated by the forest service.
